We sweep and repair chimneys throughout West Carrollton and Moraine, and we see a lot of crown cracks and mortar erosion driven by moisture. Waterproofing a sound chimney here pays for itself.

Questions we get a lot
Why does freeze-thaw wreck chimneys along the river?
Brick and mortar absorb water. Along the Great Miami the masonry stays damp longer, and every time it freezes the trapped water expands and pushes the brick face apart from the inside. Dozens of cycles a winter, and the joints and crown go first.
What are the downsides of waterproofing?
Using the wrong product. A non-breathable sealant traps moisture inside the masonry and accelerates the damage it was supposed to prevent. Waterproofing also does nothing for a cracked crown or bad flashing — those have to be fixed first or you are sealing the leak in.
Is waterproofing worth the money on a chimney here?
On sound masonry in this part of the valley, it is one of the better-value preventive jobs we do — it delays the repointing bill by years. On a chimney that is already spalling, it is not, and we will tell you that instead of selling it.
Do you cover Moraine as well?
Yes, West Carrollton and Moraine both. Same crew, same week, same free inspection to start.
